The Petersen Automotive Museum is currently updating the staffing needs of
its Education Department.  As such, to improve guidelines in which to work,
job descriptions for Volunteer & Tours Coordinator or similar position would
be greatly appreciated for comparison and updates.

Also, any suggestions for resources with sample job descriptions would be
immensely appreciated.

Following is the current job description we have for Volunteer & Tours
Coordinator:

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Volunteers & Tours Coordinator is responsible for providing trained
docents to offer guided tours to the schools and the public and for
maintaining policies and procedures of the volunteer program.  Serves as the
primary link between Museum staff and volunteers.  Acts as one of the
liaisons between the Education Department and the Museum staff.  Also,
involved in all the aspects of the Museum so as to help ensure the Museum
retains an educational focus.  Lends assistance to the department manager
for the development and implementation of educational resources and public
programs, both on and off-site.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
·     Responsible for the Volunteer Program: including the recruitment,
training, placement,    supervision, and evaluation of volunteers.
·     Develop and prepare docent materials.
·     Planning/implementation of docent training classes.
·     Coordinate volunteer projects, outings, and group meetings including
Volunteer Appreciation  Reception, field trips, and monthly meetings
·     Evaluate volunteers/coordinate peer training.
·     Assist in development of education materials and projects for the
galleries, special      projects, and newsletters or publications.
·     Available to represent museum at off-site meetings and within the
museum field.
·     Develop the Museum's Tour program, and assists in the development of
the Education   Department's annual budget and marketing needs.
·     Schedule and send written verifications of tour date/inform museum
staff and volunteers of         tours.
·     Assist any special projects (i.e. grant-funded exhibits and
programs) targeting children    and tours.
·     School, community, and visitor relations (respond to needs and
create exposure for the         public).

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
·     Performs other work-related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
·     Bachelor's Degree in Education, Museum Studies, Anthropology or
History is preferred.
·     1-2 years in a museum or informal education setting, or other
relevant experience.
·     Outgoing, self-motivated person who enjoys working with the public.
·     Excellent interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and a
willingness to work as a member         of a team are essential
qualifications.
·     Able to work varied hours including evenings or weekends depending
on program needs.
