                          ANNOUNCEMENT OF VACANCY

                  ASSISTANT CURATOR, WITTLIFF GALLERY OF
                     SOUTHWESTERN & MEXICAN PHOTOGRAPHY


RESPONSIBILITIES:   Serves at the photo archivist for the Wittliff
Gallery.
Directly responsible for the daily operations of the gallery which
include
reference service, accessioning acquisitions, identifying and ordering
appropriate published support materials, arranging and describing
collections, preparing finding aids, speaking to classes and other
groups,
and conducting gallery tours. Works collaboratively with the Curator and

department staff in managing the acquisition of photographs, developing
policies and procedures, and planning public events and fund-raising
activities.  Assists in curating photographic exhibitions.  Writes,
edits,
and prepares a variety of printed materials to promote the collection.
Coordinates traveling photographic exhibitions from gallery holdings.
Assists in editing the Wittliff Gallery book series; develops and
maintains
the gallery web site (library.swt.edu/swwc/photo/index.html) May
supervise
student workers and interns.  Reports to the Curator, Special
Collections.

QUALIFICATIONS:  ALA-accredited master's degree or a masters degree
relating to art and photography with archival experience; substantial
knowledge of Southwestern and Mexican photography and culture;
experience
in writing and editing for publication.  Preferred strong verbal and
written skills in English and Spanish; a working knowledge of design
principles and exhibit techniques; familiarity with microcomputer
applications used in special collections and archives.

SALARY & BENEFITS:   $2,325+ monthly commensurate with experience.
Benefits include monthly contribution to health insurance/benefits
package
and choice of retirement program.  No state or local income taxes.

ALBERT B. ALKEK LIBRARY  (library.swt.edu):  Holdings of the Alkek
Library
exceed 1.1 million volumes.  The library is a selective depository for
U.S.
Government and Texas documents, and is a participant in TexShare. Access
to
physical and electronic collections and other bibliographic resources is

available through the DRA automated library system and other online,
CD-ROM, and Internet interfaces.  The library staff is dedicated to
providing high quality services and resources to support the
university's
teaching and research programs.

WITLIFF GALLERY (library.swt.edu/swwc/photo/index.html):  Established in

1996, The Wittliff Gallery of Southwestern & Mexican Photography is a
creative center and archives devoted to the photographic cultures of
Mexico
and the Southwestern United States.  The gallery's mission is to bring
together a comprehensive range of work from the region that represents
the
history of photography from the 19th century to the present day, with an

emphasis on contemporary imagery.  The goal of the gallery is to provide

students, faculty, visiting scholars, and the community at large with a
resource that reveals the importance of photography as a document of
social
realities and a testimony of personal visions.

SWT & SAN MARCOS:    Southwest Texas State University is located in San
Marcos (ld.centuryinter.net/tourism), a scenic river community on the
eastern edge of the Texas hill country between Austin and San Antonio.
SWT has grown from a small teachers college to a comprehensive
university
with an enrollment of more than 21,000 students offering undergraduate
and
master's level instruction, as well as doctoral programs in
environmental
geography and geographic education.  The university's mission is to
