I am posting this message for a colleague who is not on the list.

From time to time to time our institution will provide researchers and
publishers with digital images of photographs or objects from our
collection. It has been our policy to embed these images (and any image we
use on our website) with a digital watermark. The watermark was supplied
free of charge through Digimarc, but effective April 3, there will be a fee
for its use if it used more than 99 times per year.

In the past, we have had people take and reproduce images on our websites
and in publications without permission. We have tried to protect our
photographs and images used on our website by limiting them to 72 dpi. When
printed from the web, the images are of poor quality. However, this does
not protect us from someone lifting an image from our website and then using
it on their own.

Does anyone else on the list use watermarks? Have you found them to be
effective? Are they worth the expense? Are there other ways to protect our
photographs and images on the web? After they have been scanned?

If you think this discussion would be beneficial to our colleagues on the
list, please respond on the list, otherwise please respond off list to
[log in to unmask] Thank you.
