Project Summary
The Ohio Historical Society is calling for submissions from experienced
artists for the commission of six, full color artist's renderings depicting
the lifeways of American Indians in ancient Ohio. The "Ancient Ohio" art
series will portray a scene from six archaeological periods, from the
Paleoindian Period to the Late Prehistoric Period. The selected artist will
earn a commission of $21,000 for the series of six, 3' x 4' artists'
renderings ($3,500 each) on canvas in a durable medium such as oil or
acrylic.
The "Ancient Ohio" art series is a vital component of the Ohio Archaeology
Project, the first comprehensive media project about the state's ancient
American Indian heritage. The Ohio Archaeology project is a collaborative
effort among dozens of nonprofit organizations, including Voyageur Media
Group, The Ohio Historical Society, The Ohio Department of Education, and
Ohio Educational Telecommunications. This landmark project features four
interrelated components: a three-hour documentary, a companion website, a
companion book and the "Ancient Ohio" art series.
The Ohio Historical Society is leading in the development of the "Ancient
Ohio" art series, which is funded by grants from The Ohio Arts Council and
The Wohlgemuth Herschede Foundation. The "Ancient Ohio" art series will be
used in all facets of the Ohio Archaeology project, which is targeted for
distributed to public television stations, schools, libraries and cultural
institutions in the summer of 2003. The artwork will also be part of a
traveling exhibit in Ohio before settling in for display and permanent
curation at The Ohio Historical Center in Columbus.
Deadline for submissions
Submissions must be received by the Ohio Historical Society by 5:00 p.m.
(EST) on Friday, February 15, 2002. There will be no exceptions. The artist
is to be selected by a seven-person art advisory panel composed of artists,
archaeologists and scholars. Submissions will be judged on February 22nd.
Formal notifications are to be mailed by February 26th.
