Hi Russ - Good point...but it begs the question, what size drill bit did you
use to drill the hole? Thanks! VivianLea

Hi VivianLea,

While I appreciate your concern, because the holes drilled in the
attachments are under constant negative air flow (more air going through the
hole than the tip), it is virtually impossible for particulates (or liquids)
to migrate anywhere but into the vacuum cleaner.

Russ

Hi Russ and List - thanks for the input. My concern with this solution is
that some of the particulates will be recycled back into the room. Granted
this is a small trade off, but one to consider. I'm exploring other
non-nilfisk vacuums since I've not heard positive things about this new
model. Is anyone using the Atrix Express Vac sold by Northern States
Conservation Center or the Miele Solaris Model S514E which has 6 variable
speeds? Would love to hear from you if you're using either of these
vacuums! Thanks to all for your input. Best, VivianLea

Hi all,

While my Nilfisk is an older model and completely controllable, there is
another solution to your problem without replacing the motors and
controllers. Simply drill one or more holes in whatever attachment you are
using to allow the air to bypass the tip and thereby reduce and control the
amount of suction you require. You can take the suction down to zero with
the appropriate size opening. I have modified a number of attachments and
hoses to control the suction for the Nilfisk and other vacuum cleaners. One
of my favorite tricks is a hole drilled close to the tip that I can place my
finger over to instantly increase the suction when I need it.

VivianLea,

The vacuum we purchased had the 1100 Watt motor (we got it in Jan of
2006) and we got the variable speed attachment with it. On the lowest
setting the suction was WAY to powerful. The vacuum was virtually no
different than a house hold vacuum. The way Nilfisk fixed this problem
for me was to send me an older 800 watt vacuum motor and old variable
speed control.

Since my last post I have heard from a few people that they are midway
through another redue to bring their vacuums back in line with what
museums need. I hesitate to criticize but I wouldn't believe the rep
about the 1100 watt at this point. Most people don't realize when
museums say low suction we mean almost non-existent suction. But that's
just my 2 cents.

Hi Mandy - I've been discussing purchasing a Nilfisk with my regional
rep.
Before I called him, I searched the RC-AAM list serve archives and read
all
the previous posts. The gist of the conversation on the list was that
they
were no longer making vacuums with variable speed motors and that the
vacuums without the variable speed motors were too strong.

So to clarify, I asked my regional rep about it. His response to me
is
posted at the end of my note and you can see that they ARE still
producing
variable speed vacuums. It is just that the wattage on the motor has
increased from 800 to 1100 Watts.

So it would seem that Nilfisk DID listen to the museum users and
perhaps has
fixed the problem. Is there anyone on the list who has purchased this
newer
vacuum - i.e. the one with 1100 Watt motor and variable speed? Is it
too
strong or is it, in the immortal words of Goldilocks, "just right?"
Thanks
for the input and see below for Nilfisk's comments.

Best, VivianLea

Dear Vivian Lea,

Thank you for your continued interest in the Nilfisk line of
Industrial
Vacuum Cleaners and for alerting me about the confusion concerning the
status of our GM80 Variable Speed Vacuum.

Several years ago we upgraded our vacuum motors from the older 800
watt
motor to the 1100 watt motor. This was an across the board change in
order
to offer better performance in all Nilfisk vacuums using the drop in
style
motors. We did discover that when we married the old variable speed
controller to the larger, more powerful motor, we had some problems.
Consequently we repaired the units that were in the field and reverted
back
to selling the 800 watt motor for the variable speed vacuums. Since
that
time, our engineering department came upon the perfect controller for
our
1100 watt motors. We have been selling the new improved model for about
one
year now and have had excellent feedback from our customers. Please
remember that this unit can also be purchased through dealers. Be sure
to
ask for the new model with the 1100 watt motor and new variable speed
controller.

Sincerely,
NILFISK-ADVANCE AMERICA, INC.

Subject: Nilfisk Vacuum Update

I just wanted to let everyone who replied to my vacuum question a
while
back know that Nilfisk sent me an "old" model motor and variable speed
controller and that fixed my suction problem. We now have proper low
suction to work on textile, etc.

I would still encourage everyone to call Nilfisk (800-645-3475 x2) and
tell them that they need to revert to their old museum quality vacuum
as
it is truly appropriate, while the new model is way to powerful. If
enough of us do this hopefully they will see the "error in their
ways."

Thanks for all the help!

Sincerely,
