MINNETRISTA
Job Description

Minnetrista, East Central Indiana's Center for Natural and Cultural
Heritage, seeks applications for qualified candidates for the position of
Horticulturist.

Minnetrista creates awareness, understanding, and appreciation of the
natural heritage and cultural heritage of East Central Indiana.  It is a
fourteen-year-old, heritage institution located on a thirty-five acre
campus, with extensive gardens, along White River in downtown Muncie,
Indiana.

Position Title:                 Horticulturist
Reporting Department:   Facilities/Grounds Department
Reporting Supervisor:   Superintendent of Facilities/Grounds
Location:                       Minnetrista Campus
Length of Appointment:  Year Around
Status:                         Exempt - Full Time
Grade:                          4


PURPOSE:
This position is responsible for renovating, designing, planning and
installing all gardens and horticultural areas campus-wide, providing a
visually pleasing environment year-round.  The horticulturist will develop
horticultural practices and programs to help achieve the mission and goals
of Minnetrista.


QUALIFICATIONS:
This position must have a bachelor's degree in horticulture, with at least 3
to 5 years related experience.   Excellent customer service and leadership
abilities.  Must be able to identify training issues and implement quickly.
Able to multi-task.  Will be able to work well with others regardless of age
or background.  Must have a very good sense of urgency and priority.  The
ability to analyze problems and make independent judgments to initiate
corrective action or resolution.  Strong oral/written communication,
organizational and computer skills.  Working knowledge of herbaceous and
woody perennials.  Flexibility of schedule and daily routine.  A valid
driver's license is required.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to
enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
*       Work with, supervise and train the gardening staff and volunteers.
*       Develop gardens and landscape areas that will support educational
programs.
*       Provide assistance in the development and presentation of public
horticultural programs.
*       Available for horticulture interpretation campus wide.
*       Write a monthly garden column.
*       Plan and initiate all tasks relating to gardening and horticulture.
*       Resource for horticultural affiliate groups.
*       Diagnose and treat pest problems using chemicals when necessary.
*       Not responsible for turf management.
*       Adhere to all OSHA requirements and attend training seminars when
required.
*       Perform all other duties required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Typical workstation office environment with computer equipment, telephone,
files and above work surface.  Outdoor horticultural areas throughout the
campus of Minnetrista.
