The museum has a three year old museum press (publishing) not printing
department. We have published four books and seven booklets on local
history. Up until now the funding has come from individuals (authors),
museum store budget, and a few successful grants. We are now at the point
where we need to raise dollars for our next publication ($6,100).

We have 3 - 4 more books lined up in different stages of completion to be
published over the next three - four years. We have a restricted line item
in the museum's budget for the Press with approximately $2,000 in it. We
will take 50% of the retail profit from the sale of Press books and funnel
it back to the Press line-item starting in the next fiscal year. Eventually,
the sale of Press books should make the Press self-sustaining.

I am trying to decide if I should write a grant application for each book
one at a time, or try to write a grant application, say $25,000, for
publishing more than the one book. I'm wondering if the Press line-item
could be looked upon by granting institutions as an endowment as many
granting agencies will not grant for endowments. What do you think?
