Events & Protocol Assistant
(Full-Time)

Background:
The Guest Experience group provides meaningful learning opportunities for Mount Vernon's one million annual guests. Through a diverse portfolio of interpretive experiences, engaging public programs, services and events, we expand each guest's understanding of, and appreciation for, our nation's Founding Father.

The Department of Events & Protocol, one of Guest Experience's seven operating units, manages all public, private and internal events, experiences, conferences and programs at Mount Vernon. It also facilitates VIP tour services and protocol functions.

Guest Experience Principles:

  1.  Exceed guest expectations - be friendly, respectful, engaging, and flexible. Always remember that this visit may be their first and only.

  3.  Engage yourself in the mission of the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association - take responsibility for your continued development and commit to collaboration.  Care for your colleagues and be proud of what we accomplish together.

Position-specific Responsibilities:

  1.  Serve as the lead contact for scheduling and contracting VIP tours. Manage all inquiries, arrange for VIP tour guides, ensure VIP guests receive proper information and directions and provide superb concierge service at all times.
  2.  Serve as the lead contact for all protocol functions on the estate including, but not limited to, private wreath laying ceremonies, military retirement and promotions ceremonies, and other similar special visits.
  3.  Assist the Director of Events & Protocol with the planning and implementation of public and private events, as well as other commemorative celebrations and programming. Work closely with Guest Services' Reservations Office, the Mount Vernon Inn Catering Office and Mount Vernon support units.
  4.  Assist the Director of Events & Protocol with the planning and implementation of lecture series, receptions and special meetings/programs for internal and external parties.
  5.  Work closely with the Special Events Coordinator on the facilitation of all estate meeting spaces, room reservations and set-up requirements including use of National Library meeting and seminar spaces. Ensure accuracy of all estate calendars.
  6.  Provide general administrative support to the Director of Events & Protocol. Maintain all departmental files, records and equipment.

Minimum Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree and 1-2 years of relevant experience required. Excellent interpersonal, communication, organizational and clerical skills required.   Must be responsible, flexible, detail-oriented and a self-starter with ability to work well under pressure, manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines. Ability to work creatively and effectively as a member of a team.

Special Requirements:
Must work occasional weekends, evenings, and holidays.
Must maintain Guest Experience Accreditation: 1 meeting credits; 1 field trip credit; 2 content credits.
