Join Elaine Heumann Gurian, museum consultant, Margaret Engel, managing editor of the Newseum, and Emlyn Koster, president and CEO of Liberty Science Center, in a three-day facilitated workshop on TIMELINESS: A consideration of the role of museums in current issues, from April 3-5, 2003 at the University of Victoria in Victoria, British Columbia.

This is a conversation / discussion /think tank among senior museum colleagues:
* To explore the place of timeliness in museums, galleries and science centres,
* To define what might be meant by the term, and
* To suggest ways of disseminating this information so that it leads to further discussion, and if desired, policy and infrastructure change.

Thursday, April 3: Timeliness in Context - A day of Definitions
* An inquiry into how other industries use timeliness as a measure of excellence and why they might do so.
* Closer examination of measures
* Social response to external events
* Topic response to external events
* Explication of current event topics with longer time frame
* Changing infrastructure and mission to current issues
* What is not timely?
* How do you gage audience frame of mind?

Friday, April 4: Timeliness, the Practical Side
* Examples of museums who have been timely
* Identifying fundamental organizational changes involved in sustaining timely responses.
* How to make timeliness and relevance possible.
* Identifying the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats associated with efforts to be timely
* Defining critical success factors from other sectors
* Analyzing the Implications for planning and management

Saturday, April 5: Toward Timeliness
* Is Timeliness appropriate for museums to be considering at all or is the central function of museums to be the preserver and illustrator of our past without regard to any current situation?
* Are there some museum sectors/ disciplines for which timeliness is more central than other sectors?
* Next steps

Location: Dunsmuir Lodge, Victoria, British Columbia
Fee: $495 (Canadian funds, non-credit only; includes daily refreshment breaks and lunch)
