        POSITION DESCRIPTION

TITLE:  Coordinator
Department:     Audience Research and Evaluation

Reports To:     Linda Wilson, Manager, Audience Research and Evaluation

General Description:
Permanent part-time position  (4 days/ wk, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.)  $26,000 -
$28,000 per year (may go to full time in 2004)

This department conducts market research, evaluates exhibits/programs and
tracks the Aquarium's progress.  Various departments use the information to
assist in planning, to identify problems or test alternatives.

The Audience Research and Evaluation Coordinator assists the manager with
the overall program of audience research at Shedd Aquarium, and directly
oversees seasonal studies of general and group visitors and audience
satisfaction measures.

This is a growth position and new duties and responsibilities will be
delegated as opportunities arise.

Approximate
 % of time              Principal Job Duties and Responsibilities:

30-35%  Managing projects and staff
                                *       Develops data collection protocol
                                *       Trains and schedules staff and
volunteers
                                *       Supervises data collection /entry
                                A specific data collection protocol is
developed according to the requirements of each project, including time
considerations and goals for total numbers.  The coordinator trains,
schedules and supervises part time workers and volunteers for data
collection and entry.  This motivated group of auxiliary workers consists of
a variety of people, from students to retired volunteers that contribute to
the department according to their interests and abilities.

30-35%  Analyzing, writing and presenting results
                                *       Performs data analysis of existing
data and new projects
                                *       Writes reports and presents results
                                This position requires involvement in a
variety of projects, entailing a range of procedures, often simultaneously.
Examples include ongoing visitors studies measuring satisfaction, and
program evaluations examining conservation messages.  Data analysis can be
quantitative number crunching using database programs, or qualitative
distilling of comments down to discrete topics.  Result presentations are
tailored to the project and the client, culminating in a written report with
a comprehensible data analysis and summary.  Occasionally an oral
presentation is required to a variety of in-house audiences.

15-25%  Planning projects

information needs related to goals of project and institutional objectives
                                *       Designs and tests evaluation
instruments
                                Position entails assisting with ongoing
projects and also involvement in new project planning.  New projects require
determining the objectives of internal clients, for example the
Interpretation department or Admissions, and identifying information needs
related to the goals of the project and institutional objectives.
Evaluation instruments are designed and tested for efficacy before
implementation.

10-15%  Data management
                                *       Collects data
                                *       Codes and enters data
                                The responsibility of balancing data
collection objectives with budgetary concerns is an important aspect of the
position.  The coordinator fills in as necessary to achieve the objectives
in a timely and cost effective manner.  Methods of data collection include
observation, timing, questionnaires and interviews of aquarium visitors and
program participants.   Data processing, such as transcription of audiotapes
and data entry, is performed as needed.

Position Specifications:

        EDUCATION -
*       Bachelor's degree (M.A. preferred) in museum studies, education,
marketing, social sciences or a related field.

        JOB EXPERIENCE -
*       Two (2) years experience in survey research, museum programs or
related work, or the equivalent education and experience

        SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS -
*       Experience in designing and conducting research and evaluation
projects
*       Excellent oral and written communication skills
*       Experience with both quantitative and qualitative approaches to data
collection and analysis
*       Competency in word processing, spreadsheet and statistics/database
programs
*       Ability to work independently and cooperatively with other Shedd
staff and members of the public
*       Experience interacting with the public is desirable

        UNUSUAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS -
*       Some Saturday or Sunday hours to supervise data collection from
weekend visitors.  Some evening hours for special projects may be required.
