Internship Opportunity
Amherst Museum, a mid-size local history museum is seeking  a 12-week
collections management intern to assist with a variety of collections
projects.  Typical tasks will include, but not be limited to: cataloging,
numbering, conducting provenance research and tracking objects, and
packing/rehousing objects as needed.  Data will be entered into PastPerfect,
our collections database system. Work will be performed in our new on-site
collections storage building, and in our off-site storage buildings and in
our historic buildings. The intern will be supervised by the Curator of
Exhibits and Collections.

The stipend for this internship is $2,500 for 12 weeks (40 hrs/week,
monday-friday) from June 1 to August 23. Stipend includes housing (and
utilities including basic cable TV) in an on-site furnished 3-bedroom/one
bath house.

Intern will work with a wide variety of objects, helping curatorial staff to
relocate collections into a new on-site collections storage facility,
re-interpreting and refurnishing several historic houses, planning and
installing at least one new exhibit. The intern will gain experience working
with diverse collections, including a large textile collection, and gain
knowledge associated with cataloging objects from the mid-19th century to
the present.  The intern will become well-versed in proper cleaning,
cataloging, marking procedures, and research methods for establishing
provenance and/or object history, and preparing condition reports.  Specific
collections identified for the summer 2005 project include furniture,
household objects, and portions of our textile collection.

During the summer, the intern will have an opportunity to visit several
history museums throughout Western New York, accompanying Amherst Museum
curatorial staff as they visit collections storage facilities and exhibits.
Opportunities may also be available to work with the Museum's Education
Curator during programs for school-age children and to participate in
several of our special events.

The qualifications for this internship are: 1) Enrollment in or recent
graduate of a graduate program in Museum Studies, or closely related field;
2) A basic knowledge of and some experience with artifact handling
techniques, and general museum collection management practices;  3)
Experience with -- or willingness to learn--PastPerfect.

Amherst Museum, located mid-way between Buffalo and Niagara Falls, is on
35-acres in a semi-rural area adjacent to the historic Erie Barge Canal. The
Museum's facilities include a 22,650 sq. ft. administration and exhibit
building, the newly constructed 6,500 sq. ft. collections storage building,
and 12 historic 19th century buildings (one of which is still being
restored).  The WNY area features a wide variety of noted cultural
institutions that are within 20 minutes of the Museum; Toronto and Rochester
are less than 2 hours away.  WNY is also noted for its wonderful summer
weather, recreational opportunities, and very reasonable cost-of-living.
