Folks:

The MUA would like to announce a new contribution to the website. Flinders University graduate student Mark Opdyke has submitted a post on his field survey of a Chesapeake Bay skipjack, the Joy Parks. Mark has been recording and analyzing construction details of this vessel currently housed at the Piney Point Lighthouse Museum in Maryland as part of his Master’s thesis. By crawling over every inch of this vessel Mark has gathered construction and design details that allow him to do a comparative study with other skipjacks.

You can read his post entitled “Joy Parks: A Field Survey” by clicking on the first link under the heading “New to the MUA” here: http://www.uri.edu/mua

I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who sent us your comments regarding our newly designed home page and alternative map navigation page http://www.uri.edu/artsci/his/mua/muamap.html Your input is appreciated as always.

Finally, I have to say how pleased we’ve been with the reaction to our new teaching kits. http://www.uri.edu/artsci/his/mua/documents/muakit.pdf To date we have shipped them to five different countries around the globe and all across the US. I’d like to say thank you to all those teachers, museum staff, and government agency folks who are helping us reach so many students.

Best regards,

T Kurt Knoerl
Director
The Museum of Underwater Archaeology
