Stage stations in the western US consisted of "swing stations," 10 to 15
miles apart, where horses were changed and passengers could rest and see to
necessities, and "Home" stations up to 50 miles apart, depending on terrain,
which offered better amenities at the end of a day's travel. A day's travel
varied with terrain and weather, as well as luck with horses, harness and
coaches. Whoa unto those who broke down between swing stations!
