When I was at the Valentine Museum in Richmond, Virginia our then Director
always said that since a museum's mission as a whole is education. Our
department geared toward providing seasonal and mission-driven programs for
our visitors was called Public Programs. At the time we had a Director of
Public Programs and Assistant Director of Public Programs. I always
thought it sounded kind of spiffy myself, and on par with a Curator and
Assistant Curator. As for salaries, however, he also used to say "Working
at the Valentine is not just a job, it's a calling." I believe we had a
recent discussion on list related to that particular topic.
