Many thanks to all of those who responded to my request for NYC
hotels. There were a lot of good suggestions that I will use for
future trips. I just so happened that the U.S. Open was that weekend
and every place I called was booked up.

I ended up staying at a nice Holiday Inn in Carteret (about 20
minutes or so outside of the Big Apple). I was very satisfied
(although a nice hotel on Broadway to go to after Les Mis would've
been nice, too). For an inside room with 2 queen beds (with an
entertainment member discount) I only paid $54! I'll take it!
