I'm writing on behalf of a professor in NYU's Moving Image Archiving and Preservation program. For a class on
Contemporary Cultural Institutions, we are looking for readings (academic articles, anthologies, governmental
reports) on the following topics:

1) The value of such institutions, cultural, and otherwise: eg. the impact of Gehry's Bilbao Guggenheim on
revitalizing that port, or Baltimore's aquarium. In short, what are some of the reasons mayors want museums?

2) The compromises such institutions negotiate between private funders' wishes and their public mission.

3) Anything on the process of assessing the viability of a new cultural institution eg. the new Baryshnikov Center
at NYU. What type of studies are done beforehand, and so on.

4) The trend for building flashy extensions by prestigious architects, and the relation of that to other
destinations for the money eg. to investing in collections, etc..

Any suggestions are welcome, and I'll be happy to answer any questions about the course that you may have.
Please reply off-list.

Best,

Jeff Martin
