Dear list:

I have appreciated the discussion from both sides of the Atlantic, but couldn't help to think there is a side ot this issue that no one is discussing. As I understand it, the Brooklyn museum's charter states that all exhibitions must be open to every citizen. The museum, being sensitive to
the controversial nature of the exhibition, closed the gallery to minors. That decision, though seemingly prudent, was in violation of their charter.

Whether or not we agree with Giuliani's motives or methods, the museum does have an obligation to follow its charter - especially when funded by the government. While presenting an exhibition that tests the limits of art is a noble thing, violating your charter when you rely so heavily on
public funding is irresponsible.

Of course, the backlash would be much worse had they kept the exhibition open to all, but at least the criticism would be easier to deflect. Another instance of the "law" being an ass, I'm afraid.
