SOLINET, Inc., the Southeastern Library Network, is pleased to announce
our Fall Preservation Workshops (Please excuse cross-posting):

***********Developing a Disaster Plan (Web-based
Training)****************

Three-part Centra Session meeting 2 pm - 4 pm Thursdays, with three
weeks in between each session.
Dates: October 21 2004, November 11, 2004, December 2, 2004

To prevent unnecessary loss of materials, institutions need
knowledgeable staff and written plans for dealing with emergency
situations so that fewer disasters occur and damage is minimized.
Disaster planning requires the support and commitment of staff from many
departments, including facilities and fiscal affairs. Plan preparation
is more successful and effective when undertaken by a committee with
staff representatives from across the institution.

This web-based workshop is designed to support the work of an
institution's disaster planning committee. Homework assignments will
require input and support from a variety of staff members. Taught in 3
two-hour sessions over the course of six weeks, it guides participants
through the development of a written disaster plan. The modules cover:
establishment of a planning structure, information gathering, including
risk assessment and resource list development, setting recovery
priorities, an overview of recovery procedures, plan development, and
working with disaster recovery vendors.

Cost is $135, SOLINET members ($125 early bird, $160 late registration)

*****************Care Of Photographic Materials*********************

Tuesday, October 26 2004, University of Alabama, Birmingham, AL from
9:00 am - 4:00 pm.

This full-day introductory workshop is designed to aid cultural
institutions in developing preservation strategies based on real-world
issues: for example, storage conditions and handling guidelines for
photographic collections that provide protection and access. The
workshop is designed for those who have photographic collections and is
particularly significant for those who are responsible for the care or
use of these materials.

Among the topics covered: photographic materials and processes: issues
with prints, color, film, glass, albums, etc., environment and storage
specifications, handling and housing guidelines, exhibition issues,
duplication and reformatting, new technologies, collection maintenance,
and preservation planning.

Instructor: Andrew Robb is a photograph conservator whose clients have
included the National Gallery of Art, the Library of Congress, The
National Museum of American Art, and the National Museum of American
History.

Cost is $115 SOLINET members ($105 early bird, $140 late registration),
$155 Non-members ($145 early bird, $180 late registration). Any
institution in Alabama qualifies for the member rate.

be prepared to handle both minor incidents and large-scale emergencies.

This one-day workshop is designed for staff members responsible for, or
interested in, organizing and implementing institutional or cooperative
disaster preparedness and response procedures. In addition to in-depth
discussion on the disaster planning process, there will be
demonstrations of salvage techniques, including air-drying books,
packing out wet materials, separating and drying manuscripts, rinsing
books, and drying photographic materials.

Cost is $115 SOLINET members ($105 early bird, $140 late registration),
$155 Non-members ($145 early bird, $180 late registration). Any

********Preservation Microfilming: The Silver Standard****************

Tuesday-Wednesday, November 9-10, 2004, University of Gainesville,
Gainesville, FL from 8:30 am - 5:30 pm on Tuesday the 9th, concluding
8:30 to noon on Wednesday the 10th.

Do deteriorated and crumbling 19th century book and paper collections
comprise a large part of your library or archive? Which reformatting
technique will best preserve this material for the long term? Digital
technology is the choice to enhance access, but the Council on Library
and Information Resources considers preservation microfilming "the gold
standard" for preserving the intellectual content of brittle, endangered
materials.

This workshop is designed to train project administrators in
institutions to plan, implement, and manage microfilming projects. The
one and a half day session will cover the follow topics: planning
microfilm projects, selecting and preparing materials, microfilm
technology and equipment, standards, inspection, and quality control,
agents of film deterioration, and proper microfilm storage.

Workshop includes a hands-on quality control exercise including film
inspection, and a tour of a microfilming operation.

Instructors: Kopana Terry and Becky Ryder, Preservation Librarians,
William P. Young Library, University of Kentucky at Lexington.

Cost is $195 SOLINET members ($185 early bird, $220 late registration),
$235 Non-members ($225 early bird, $260 late registration). Any
institution in Florida qualifies for the member rate.

*********Preservation and Salvage of Audiovisual Materials (Web-based
Training)*************

Tuesday, November 16, 2004 at SOLINET, Atlanta, GA from 2:00 pm - 4:00
pm

Do you worry about the life expectancy of your VCR tapes, CDs, and
motion pictures? Do you know what to do with your audiovisual materials
in the event of water damage from flooding or leaky pipes? This web
based training session is designed to inform staff in all types of
libraries, schools, and archives who manage audiovisual collections
about preventive preservation strategies and salvage options for these
special formats. In the event of a disaster, knowing the nature of AV
materials in the collection and which formats are salvageable will help
you set recovery priorities.

Topics covered in the session: life expectancies of common media,
preservation methods for extending the life of AV materials, disaster
preparedness strategies, and elements of response and recovery of these
fragile media. Basic salvage techniques are outlined for the following
types of formats: computer magnetic media, sound and video tapes, CDs
and CDROMs, LP's, motion pictures, and microfilm. The two-hour lecture
also incorporates a discussion of recovery vendors and resources helpful
to those working with AV collections.

Cost is $60 SOLINET members ($50 early bird, $90 late registration)

**************Basic Collections Care**************

Friday, November 19, 2004 at SOLINET, Atlanta, GA from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

Public library and school media center circulating collections are
subjected to a lot of wear and tear. Most libraries perform some minor
repair on their damaged materials. Despite staff members' good
intentions, some materials and procedures used can shorten the useful
life of the book, make it difficult to open, and cause more problems
later.

This one-day workshop will teach staff how to minimize damage to
collections by learning proper use, handling and storage of collections.
Also covered are simple, economical and preservation-quality repairs on
materials for public libraries. The session emphasizes techniques that
are most often needed in public libraries, do not require expensive
equipment and supplies, and can be performed successfully by clerical or
student support staff after a short training period. The workshop will
NOT cover techniques for the repair of research collections or materials
that are special, rare, or archival.

Cost is $125 SOLINET members ($115 early bird, $150 late registration),
$165 Non-members ($155 early bird, $190 late registration). Any
institution in Georgia qualifies for the member rate.

*****************Intermediate Book Repair**********************

Tuesday-Wednesday, December 7-8, 2004, Georgia Archives, Morrow, GA from
8:30 am - 5:00 pm.

This two-day workshop is designed to hone repair skills learned in
Fundamentals of Book Repair. Participants will receive hands-on
instruction of more advanced techniques for general collections repair
(recase old covers, attach loose signatures, and other endsheet
replacement methods), as well as an introduction to protective
enclosures. Lecture and discussion address treatment decision making,
properties of adhesives, and managing a book repair operation.

Participants from SOLINET's Fundamentals of Book Repair workshop are
preferred for registration. Otherwise, please provide a written
statement describing book repair skill level.

Cost is $175 SOLINET members ($165 early bird, $200 late registration),

institution in Georgia qualifies for the member rate.

**************Introduction to Grants for Preservation
(Web-based)*************

Tuesday, December 14, 2004 Centra Session from 2pm - 4 pm.

Finding the funds for preservation projects in your institution can
often be a challenge. Fortunately there are outside sources of funding
available for preservation projects, if you know where to look and how
to apply for them. This two-hour CENTRA session is an introduction to
grant funding and the process of writing a grant proposal. Topics
covered include: types of grants, preparing to apply, elements of a
grant proposal, tips on grant administration, outcome measurement, and a
brief overview of the most common grants awarded to archives, libraries,
and other cultural institutions in the United States. Emphasis will be
placed on grant funding for preservation projects. Small institutions
are encouraged to participate. CENTRA, a web-based learning program,
allows for participants to interact with the instructor and their peers
in real time.

Cost is $60, SOLINET members ($55 early bird, $70 late registration)
