An anecdote:

In a first year English literature course I took during my first year at
RPI many years ago, one student complained to the instructor: "I am an
engineering student; none of this English literature stuff is going to be
very useful to me. Why do I have to take it?" The teacher replied: "We
have a policy here at RPI, every student is required to take at least one
foreign language."
