Sorry, I am not a museum specialist but a multimedia-producer.

As far as I know "Freilichtmuseum" is a gerneric term. There are a lot of
quite different tyes of "Freilichtmuseen" in German speaking countries:
Folk art museums, archeological parcs, sometimes even
railway museums and many others.

For example have al look at the

Ötztaler Heimat und Freilichtmuseum Längenfeld-Lehn

It is very similiar to the french idea of an "ecomusée".

I just searched the archives. I found some definitions of ecomuseum but no
distinguishing
open-air-museums / ecomuseums.

Actually there is no information concerning ecomuseums  in this site ...
