The Gilcrease Musuem recently (Dec. 3rd) opened an exhibit entitled Peace Medals: Symbols of Influence and Prestige. Thomas Gilcrease, founder of the musuem built a collection of medals of American, British, Canadian and French origins. A companion voume, Peace Medals: Negotiating Power in Early America, provides eight articles on topics ranging from the precursors to peace medals (shell gorgets), to articles on American, British, French and Spanish peace medals. The articles focus on the stories behind the medals; to whom were they given and why, rather than a strictly numismatic approach.

Subject: Re: [MUSEUM-L] Another Numismatic Question

The Milwaukee Public Museum has a numismatic collection and a numismatic exhibit currently on display:

http://www.mpm.edu/exhibitions/featured/numismatics/

From a Lao "tiger tongue" ingot to American "test" coins that never made it to circulation, Numismatics! showcases a wealth of world history by way of collectible coinage.

Much more than just minted or printed money, the field of numismatics includes the study and collection of coins, currency, tokens and medals, and the MPM exhibit showcases nearly 200 rare, prized specimens. Most items date from the 1800s, although a few currency items reach as far back as 2500 years, and many belong to organizations, regimes, colonies or even countries that no longer exist. Examples of this include a French Silver Ecu bearing the likeness of the last of their absolute monarchs, Louis XVI, a 20-centime coin bearing the stamp of French Indo-China and a five-ruble gold coin bearing the likeness of Nicholas II, the last of the Russian czars.

Hello All!

I would like to know how many universities and museums in the United States have numismatic collections, whether they be teaching collections, large or small exhibits, web exhibits. Any of that information that you could give I would appreciate. Even if you could point me in the right direction, that would be great. I appreciate any and all help I can get. Thanks again and have a good week!

We have been using Mimsy XG for a number of years, and its predecessor Mimsy 2000, all the way back to 1998. We also use the Mobius web interface. I'm pretty familiar with the product and one of our staff members is even more familiar. Overall, I really like it. However, it is NOT for a computer novice. Oracle-based, the only real limitations that we have encountered are more hardware than software. It works much better for 3-d collections than it does for archives.

Please contact me off-list with specific questions. I can try and answer them, or send you to our data entry person.

All the best,

Hello everyone!

I was wondering if anyone could provide any thoughts (good, bad or indifferent) about the collection database, Mimsy XG (MXG)? My institution is looking to upgrade their software from iO, which has not had any software updates in a few years, to Mimsy XG.

Thank you for taking the time to provide your opinions or personal experience!

Subject: Help selecting Image Database

Hello,

I am looking for an image database that I can upload and archive our images on, so that everyone on the network can search the images by a access number. Something simple, that can deal with jpgs, tiff and raw files. I'm doing the primary work in Lightroom, but I'm looking for something that can be accessed through a web browser.

When I search online I can't find anything useful.

Any pointers are appreciated.

Thank you,

Andreas

Hello,

Have you looked into Microsoft Sharepoint? A photographic archive project

for our institution was using Sharepoint. It was quite successful as a low

level, digital asset management system. You can upload images and then

customize data columns for entering metadata. And Sharepoint is accessed

through your web browser and can be shard across your network.
