CURATOR SEARCH

The Frederick Douglass-Isaac Myers Maritime Park, scheduled to open in
July, 2005, is an exciting new heritage tourism and education destination
in a historic environment that will celebrate the lives and contributions
of African-Americans to maritime history. It is located in the oldest
remaining industrial building on Baltimore’s harbor, adjacent to the site
of the first African-American owned shipyard in the country, founded by
Isaac Myers and fourteen other founders. The Maritime Park will feature
interpretive exhibits, a working shipyard and marine railway, sculptures
dedicated to Douglass and Myers, and hands-on education and job-training
programs for children and young adults from diverse backgrounds. The focus
will be on the historic shipyard, Douglass and Myers as individuals
working and living in Fells Point and their contributions to maritime
industry in Baltimore and beyond, and the impact on African American
entrepreneurship from the 19th century to the present day. We are
currently seeking a curator to oversee all exhibit-related aspects of the
Maritime Park, including management of loaned artifacts, and the planning
and execution of permanent and temporary interpretive exhibits. The
successful candidate will have the ability to make the exhibits personal
and engaging by bringing the visitor into the story, and helping them to
connect to the history of the site and the people who worked the site.
He/she will be able to effectively interpret and translate concepts,
content, and activities into interactive experiences. The Curator will be
responsible for conducting, coordinating, and overseeing exhibit research;
artifact research, procurement, and care; and thematic and script
development. In addition, the curator will work with educators to
coordinate curriculum development and technology with exhibits, will
collaborate with exhibit designers, and will play a major role in the
creation of interpretive signage for the grounds of the Maritime Park.

A Master’s Degree in History or Museum Studies is preferred; a background
in African-American history is desirable. Must have excellent written and
interpersonal communication skills, organizational and administrative
skills, research skills, and the ability to work independently and under
tight deadlines. Salary is commensurate with experience, and we offer an
excellent benefits package. To apply, send a resume, cover letter,
relevant writing sample (2-3 pages), and three references to:
