I've always been under the impression that to repost an article in its
entirety on an electronic mailing list was a violation of
copyright.  Usually, I would limit myself to posting the URL and citing
short excerpts as fair use.

I too have never received spam from my registration with NYT (nor have I
ever been asked for salary data!)
