You can find some recipe's for hardtack at

http://web.grinnell.edu/individuals/hayesmd/dannsweb/stations.html

We use them to hand to kids at Camp Grinnell, a living history educational event in Grinnell, Iowa. A few of us meet a week or so before the event and just have some fun making the stuff.

By making it ourselves, we save some money for other things -- not a lot of money, but enough for something else.
