Here is a story that happened very recently. A cavalry sword was recently donated to the museum I work for, well upon examination we noticed there was a number that looked suspiciously like our old number system. The donor finally told us the story that about 25-30 years ago the then director took the sword from the collection and traded it to the donor for a pistol the director wanted for the museum. We were able to find the original catalog card and although never officially deaccessioned the director had at least marked on the card where the sword had went. If find this to be a dubious practice at best. I suppose one should be grateful for the documentation.
