Gallery Manager / Assistant to the Owner


Responsibilities include:

Greeting and assisting the general public; knowledge and discussion of the
gallery material and
facilitating sales.
Supervising the upkeep of the gallery space
Assisting in exhibition planning, catalogue production, and public events
Working with the Special Projects Coordinator on current gallery focus
Supervising interns
Assisting the owner with processing correspondence and appraisals
Researching artists, cultures, auction records, and object provenance
information
Maintaining computerized inventory and client database, and organizing
consignor and client files
Describing, measuring, photographing, and packing objects
Coordination of shipping and receiving
Answering telephone inquiries
Office management and light bookkeeping

Skills:

Personable, energetic individual with an interest in art (background in art
history preferred) to work effectively with collectors, curators, and the
general public in a professional environment
Flexible, self-motivated, and able to work well without supervision
Ability to coordinate short- and long-term projects
Excellent organizational skills and sense of aesthetic presentation
Computer literacy; comfortable in PC Windows environment; the gallery uses
a relational database designed in-house (based on Access 97) and Word for
Windows 95.  Familiarity with Adobe Photoshop, scanning, use of the
internet, and email helpful.
Good typing, communication, and general office skills
Management / retail experience helpful

Job Structure:

Period of employment is from June 1, 1998 through June 30, 1999 (flexible
start date)
Work week is Tuesday through Saturday, 10 - 6 pm, Thursdays until 8 pm
Possibility of extending period of employment
First few weeks are spent learning office and gallery procedures, learning
to use the database, and becoming familiar with the material the gallery
offers.  At the end of the period of employment, the assistant is
responsible for soliciting applications for, interviewing, and recommending
his/her replacement, and spending the last few weeks training that person
to take over the position.

Salary / Benefits:

Salary is on an hourly rate.  The salary for thirteen months is
approximately $20,000 June 1, 1998 through June 30, 1999.
Health insurance is provided
Upon satisfactory completion of the thirteen-month period, there will be a
bonus of $1500 - $2500, raising the overall pay to $21,500 - $22,500.  The
bonus would be forfeit if the employee does not complete the thirteen
months.
Paid holidays include: Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, or a day during
Hanukkah, New Years Day, and Independence Day.  In addition there are three
paid days of vacation available, not to be taken during the first three
months of employment.  Unpaid vacation days are arranged on a case by case
basis.

About Hurst Gallery:

Hurst Gallery was founded 17 years ago, and has an international clientele
including many museums and private collectors.  Located in the Harvard
University campus, the gallery exhibits and sells African, Native American,
Oceanic, Asian, Pre-Columbian, and Ancient art and artifacts.  In addition,
gallery owner, Norman Hurst, provides appraisal and consultation services
in the aforementioned specialized areas.  The staff at Hurst Gallery is
committed to providing personalized attention to its clients; the gallery
employs one full-time employee and one part-time employee who participate
on all levels of the business.

Exhibitions are frequent and past catalogued sales include: A Passion for
the Past: Historic Collections of Antiquities from Egypt and the Levant;
Ngola: The Weapon as Authority, Identity, and Ritual Object in Sub-Saharan
Africa; Power and Prestige: The Arts of Island Melanesia and the Polynesian
Outliers; Collecting African Art: 1890 - 1950; Art and Artifacts of
Melanesia; Native American Basketry; African Arts of War and Peace; Art and
Artifacts of Polynesia; Visual Diplomacy: Art of the Cameroon Grasslands;
and The Ancient Southwest.  Numerous uncatalogued exhibitions are also
organized.
