Assistant Project Conservator, Sir Frances Bacon Collection
The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens
Grant-sponsored, Two-Year Position, Half-time with Limited Benefits

Working as a member of the Conservation team within the Preservation
Department, the Assistant Project Conservator works exclusively on the
conservation treatment of rare volumes in the Sir Francis Bacon collection.
Sir Francis Bacon (1561-1626) is a noted English philosopher and statesman,
and the Huntington's Bacon collection is one of the most extensive
collections of Bacon material in the world. Subjects covered by volumes in
this collection include law, politics, philosophy, the natural and physical
sciences, literature, cryptography, magic, witchcraft, alchemy, and
Rosicrucianism. The Assistant Project Conservator for the Bacon Collection
works under the direction of the Bacon Collection Project Conservator, and
reports to Chief Preservation Officer.

Essential Functions: The Assistant Project Conservator for the Bacon
Collection performs rare book conservation treatments working with leather,
cloth, and paper. The project will include such treatments as re-backing,
re-casing, re-binding, re-sewing, Japanese tissue board attachment, paper
cases, and paper mends. The Assistant Project Conservator will write
treatment reports, which include digital photo-documentation.
Qualifications desired: BA or BS degree and an advanced degree from an
accredited conservation training graduate program or BA or BS degree and 3
years experience in conservation of rare books. Knowledge of and experience
with collection conservation techniques and approaches. Demonstrated
knowledge and skill in book conservation. Excellent eye-hand coordination.
Excellent interpersonal skills and willingness to work in a team-oriented
environment. Basic computer skills.

THE HUNTINGTON:  Located about 15 miles north-east of downtown Los Angeles,
was created in 1919 as an independent private library for advanced scholarly
research in English and American history and literature, combined with
public art galleries and botanical gardens. The Huntington exhibits
collections of British, Renaissance, and American art, rare books and
manuscripts, and 150 acres of specialized botanical gardens. It is consulted
annually by some 1,800 scholars, visited by 500,000 members of the general
public, and employs approximately 300 with an annual operating budget of
over $14 million
