1) It is not all glamour. You sometimes have to haul boxes, no matter who
you are. You will have to put up signs, drive trucks, and get your hands
dirty.

2) You sometimes (OFTEN!) have to work with topics, individuals and
artifacts you do not personally like or feel are important, and you have to
treat them the same way you do the important stuff. Also, you will have to
suck up to people who you will feel are not worth the deference, but they
can never know that.

3) You will put in more hours than you are paid to put in, on things that
are often somebody else's job, and you must do so cheerfully.

Come to think of it, these are not just endemic to museum work. Any paid
job will have these drawbacks.

This is a two-parter:

FOR THE TENURED, MORE SENIOR MUSEUMS FOLK:

What are three things you believe that young people
should know and be prepared to handle in museums work?
