The Specify Software Project is pleased to announce the arrival of
Specify 5, a software platform for managing biodiversity collection
data. Specify 5 has web server and DiGIR interfaces, new Google-like
database searches and an improved look and feel for easy navigation and
use.

Specify 5 is now available from the Specify Software Project web site:
www.specifysoftware.org.


Specify 5's significant improvements include:

A New Look and Feel - the new left-side Navigation Panel contains all of
Specify's frequently-used features. You can leave the Navigation Panel
fully displayed for easy navigation or you can close it to obtain more
screen space for working with your data. We have also added workspace
buttons for one-click access to commonly used functions.

Express Search - you are going to appreciate the convenience of the new
Specify Express Search. With Google-like functionality, Express Search
can instantly find any text or numbers in your Specify database. Express
searches are enabled by building indexes for the data tables and fields.
For more complex searches, Specify's conventional field-structured
searches are always available. 

Expanded Statistics - we expanded the number of collections statistics
for your database. A summary appears on the left-side of the Specify
window, and a comprehensive list can be displayed as you exit Specify or
when you click the word Statistics in the Navigation Panel. 

Form Sets and the Forms Manager - Specify 5.0 lets you create any number
of customized data forms for individual users or projects. Now every
user of your Specify database can enter and edit data on forms optimized
for his/her task or expertise level. 

Responding to feedback from users at the 120+ collections that use
Specify as their primary database software, this major release
incorporates many usability enhancements and interface refinements to
Specify's existing features as well as the addition of new functions to
make collections data management more efficient and productive.

Our roadmap for Specify is aimed at embedding collections data
processing into the emerging web service computing architectures in
environmental biology--to increase productivity, network integration and
research impact for zoological museums and herbaria.
