Function of the Position
This is a professional position responsible for the design and execution of
a coordinated development, marketing and membership program.  Development
efforts will increase financial support from corporations, foundations,
individuals and local & national agencies. Marketing efforts will increase
visibility of the museum and attendance in all areas of museum operations.
Memberships will sustain current membership levels and future levels.

The Director constructs and executes fundraising plans and strategies and
oversees major fundraising campaigns, annual and special giving programs
with emphasis on annual giving and major gift solicitation including grant
writing for support from foundations, corporations and government agencies.
The incumbent is also responsible for overseeing the development and
implementation of programs to increase the Foundation's membership.
Responsible for creating and implementing an overall marketing strategy for
the museum.  Guides and directs the publicity, advertising, community
relations and marketing of all programs and events.


Job Duties

DEVELOPMENT

*       Works closely with the Museum’s Executive Director to create and
implement fundraising programs and activities designed to raise funds in
accordance with specific goals, in support of the programs of the
Museum.
*       Handles prospect identification, cultivation and solicitation, with
emphasis on major gifts. The Director has direct responsibility for major
gift solicitation. Makes face-to-face cultivation and fundraising calls,
individually or with the Executive Director or other key Board leaders, to
obtain support for the Museum.
*       Collaborates with colleagues and Board of Directors to create
strategies for identifying and approaching potential donors.
*       Oversees coordination of all annual fund campaigns, sponsorship
efforts and membership drives. Coordinates and works with museum volunteers
on
fundraising related activities.
*       Oversees execution of special events (luncheons, dinners, etc.) to
cultivate current and future donors and enhance the image of the museum
with various constituencies.
*       Assists the Executive Director in her role as liaison to Board of
Directors Marketing and Development Committee.
*       Develops and monitors annual plan of museum fundraising goals and
objectives, produces monthly fundraising reports, works with Executive
Director in preparing fundraising reports for the Board of Directors.
Confers with the
Executive Director to review achievements, fiscal performance and discuss
required changes in goals or objectives resulting from current status and
conditions.
Working with the Executive Director and other related staff, develops budget
for external outreach activities including fundraising and events. Monitors
and manages fundraising budget.
Coordinates other fundraising activities as assigned by the executive
Director.

MARKETING

        Formulates goals and programs to maintain and strengthen favorable public
attitudes to wards the museum through a broad range of sophisticated public
relations initiatives. Use print and broadcast media to disseminate news and
information about the institution and its objectives.
        Prepare and monitor an annual communications program and budget keyed
directly to the museum’s strategic plan.
        Advise the Executive Director, Board of Directors and senior staff on
public relations implications of organizational policy and program
decisions.
        Direct the planning, implementation and evaluation of attendance marketing
for the museum, including arranging for appropriate market research.
        Develop, supervise and seek funding for special promotions, programs and
events.
        Maintain active connections to advertising and media/communications
community.

MEMBERSHIP

Design and administer strategies for building and maintaining the membership
program (i.e. direct mail, annual appeal, phone-a-thon).
Develop and implement strategies to identify and solicit new members;
upgrade and renew current members and increase member retention.
Coordinate museum representation and conduct membership promotions at
community and civic events, as well as at on site museum events.
Plan and execute at least two members only vents a year.
Supervise the administration of member benefits and acknowledgements.


JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:  B.A. or B.S. degree in Mass Communications, Journalism or
related field of study.  Preferred:  M.A. in Mass Communications, Journalism
or related field of study.

Experience/Abilities:  Minimum 3 – 5 years development and marketing
experience for a non profit, preferably a museum.

Considerable skill in facilitation, collaborative problem solving and
strategic planning. Ability to evaluate, analyze, and interpret information
and render sound, independent decisions.
Knowledge of grant research and writing, planned giving, annual campaigns,
capital endowment campaigns, foundation and corporate giving and direct
mail. Proven experience (securing at least $100,000 in awards and gifts
annually). Experience in program development and implementation. Strong
organizational and time management skills. Excellent interpersonal skills
and the ability to influence others, create harmonious, productive working
relationships and successfully persuade others.
Must have excellent written, verbal, listening communication skills and the
ability to inform and persuade audiences.
Non-profit experience a must.
Skill in the use of Microsoft Office applications and working with donor
databases.
