Just a word of warning. You won't be able to live on your salary alone.
If you are lucky enough to get a job at all, you will be making very
little. Prepare yourself for less than $30K. Also the job market is
extremely tight in the Bay area. I have a BA in History from an Ivy
League, an MA in Museum Studies, lived in the area for 2 years, volunteered
at 2 local museums, and made tons of connections. Still I never managed to
land a museum job.
I also found out I make more working in the library here at Stanford than
comparable level museum positions, and if it weren't for my wife being an
engineer, I couldn't live here.
On the up side, the area is great, the people are great, and I am glad to
be here and want to stay. I would also happily give you any names and
contact info to the people I met in my networking frenzy. What sort of
museum are you interested in?
(I don't mean to sound bitter. I would take a lower paying museum job if
my family concerns would allow that. I intend on continuing to support
museums, but from the outside.)
