Curator/Director of Curatorial Services – Chicago, Illinois

Thomas & Associates, Inc., is pleased to announce our search for the
Curator/Director of Curatorial Services for the DuSable Museum of African
American History.  Founded in 1961 and located in the historic Hyde Park
area of Chicago, the DuSable Museum is the oldest independent African
American history museum in the United States with a collection of more than
15,000 paintings, sculpture, works on paper, and historic documents related
to the experiences, achievements, history and culture of Africans and
African Americans.  The Curator/Director of Curatorial Services works
closely with the President & CEO, the Director of Educational Services, the
Senior Historian, and the community to create exhibitions, provide
programmatic leadership and assume responsibility for the development and
management of the Museum’s collections. The Museum is in the midst of a $25
million expansion that will provide additional space for exhibitions,
collections, interactive learning areas and an expanded Museum store and
dining facilities.  In addition to exhibitions, the successful candidate
will be responsible for all matters related to the collection including
acquisitions, loans, documentation and conservation; planning and overseeing
the relocation of the collection to off-site storage; reinstallation of the
collection; reviewing and recommending all exhibition and collections
management policies and procedures; recommending an in-house collection
storage system; and overseeing the development and implementation of a
computer inventory system in accordance with accreditation guidelines of the
American Association of Museums.  The ideal candidate will possess at least
6 years progressive experience in exhibition development and collections
management with significant supervisory experience of museum staff, a broad
knowledge of African, African American, and Chicago history, and experience
working with the academic community.  An advanced degree in history or
African American Art is required.  This position reports to the President &
