I have a friend who teaches in the gifted program in
the Anchorage public schools.  She did a unit on
archaeology doing pretty much what you described and,
I believe, borrowed boxes from the Anchorage Museum.
I'll try to get a hold of her and the museum to see if
they can give you some helpful hints.

Sounds like fun.
