Dianne,

We do not have a docent "uniform", but we do feel that it is important that the docent be recognizable. It is not as critical for groups that meet their docent at a central location, but it is important if the docent is providing assistance in an exhibit gallery on a more informal
basis.

We also like to have something about the clothing (logo, color, etc.) that is related to the special exhibit. We usually build the price of the garment into the rewards system for participating in the docent training for that particular exhibition. It's a small price to pay for
the hours of volunteerism that are donated by anyone who commits themselves to both the training sessions and docentry during the length of the exhibit.

We have found that an "grilling apron" (one that slips over the head and has a front panel, in a heavy duty canvas-like material) with pockets usually fits the bill. We buy them in bulk in a cream color then add the color, logo etc. as required. It's a distinctive article of
clothing that other staff and visitors are not likely to be wearing. It's unisex (the guys don't seem to feel it's too feminine). The pockets are handy for keeping notes, small handouts, etc. available.

One other thing I should mention. Our security force does wear uniforms which imparts a psychological "authority figure" appearance. Do you want your docents to convey that same image?

Good luck with your decision.
