Mr. Kessler,
Searching for a job is a difficult task. However,
searching for a job in the museum field is even
harder. I searched for 7 months and applied for 150
jobs but never found anything. I would say about 100
out of those 150 tailored resumes I sent out went
completely unanswered. I never even got a "Thank you
for your application letter." Today, these kinds of
manners are to be expected. Don't give up!
Currently, I am the visual and performing arts
specialist at a nonprofit and I love it. The pay is
terrible, but hey, the pay in a museum is not so great
either. I also went back to school in New York and
then started my own business in art/antiques
appraisal. My point is, if you really want a job in
the art world, you are really going to have to work
for it. It will be frustrating and down right
depressing but eventually you will find something.
This list is great and if you put a call out for
mentors I am sure someone will respond. For several
months, a wonderful gentleman from this list helped me
work on my resume and cover letters. I have attached
a list of links that will help you but if you know
someone in the museum field it will make it one
thousand times easier. Almost everyone I know who has
gotten a job in a museum knew someone at the museum or
on the board of directors. Good luck to you and all
of the other recent Grads.
