In response to Erica Maniez's question about a local
newspaper indexing project:

Here are a couple of books that could be of help to your
project:

1.)
"How to Index Your Local Newspaper Using WordPerfect or
Microsoft Word for Windows" by Carla D. Morris.
Published by Libraries Unlimited, 1995.

Besides containing information about how to begin such a
project, this book also discusses how to get funding and
has a list of common subject headings and indexing terms
which will give your project a head start.

2.)
"Indexing Newspapers, Magazines, and Other Periodicals",
by Geraldine Beare. Published by Society of Indexers,
1999.

3.)
"Newspaper Indexing for Historical Societies, Colleges,
and High Schools" by Esther Perica. Published by Library
Research Associates, 1975.

Here are some articles on newspaper indexing:

"Newspaper Indexing Policies and Procedures"
http://www.ibiblio.org/journalism/indexing.html

"Indexing a Local Newspaper on the Web" by Bobb Menk,
Library Computing, Vol. 18, no. 2 1999, 151-159.

Here are links to the major indexing software products'
websites. This software is expensive and takes a fair
amount of time to learn to master but it does pay
rewards in the long run (but it should not be thought of
as an absolute requirement).
