CHIEF CURATOR
The Missouri Historical Society seeks a Chief Curator with a strong
understanding of history and historical method, an interest in
community history, strong intellectual and administrative leadership
skills, and a solid material culture background.   As a department
head within the divisions of Collections and Conservation, the Chief
Curator will supervise a staff of four objects curators, each with
their own area of curatorial responsibility, as well as assume direct
curatorial responsibility for an appropriate portion of the
collection.
The Chief Curator will play a lead role in the interpretation of
historical object collections in a larger historical context and in
working with staff in the Exhibits and Research divisions to develop
and mount exhibitions.  The Chief Curator serves on the Curatorial
Collections Committee; participates in divisional and institutional
projects and initiatives, assuming a leadership role where
appropriate; and oversees the professional development of the objects
curatorial staff.  The successful candidate will maintain appropriate
professional memberships and will be active and current within their
field.   The position requires an MA in history, museum studies, or a
related field and a minimum off 5 years experience in a museum setting
that includes demonstrated experience with exhibitions, historical
research, and all aspects of museum curation.  Excellent research,
writing and verbal skills, familiarity with  IBM compatible computers
and museum databases,  and ability to work in a collaborative
environment  also required.  Publication history and supervisory
experience desirable.
