The Cultural Resource Management Program at the University of Victoria is
pleased to offer the following 6-day immersion course Connecting with
Communities through Interpretation for professionals in museums, heritage
planning and related organizations.

Connecting with Communities through Interpretation

Effective interpretation engages communities and individuals with heritage
and cultural resources in personal and meaningful ways. At the same time, it
helps heritage organizations revitalize themselves by articulating a
compelling purpose and focus for their overall operations.

The course examines the principles that shape the ways in which heritage
sites and museums effectively communicate with diverse audiences, and the
practices involved in creating lively, informative and relevant interpretive
programs and activities. Using a framework of three critical questions for
interpretation, you strengthen your ability to:

        * Understand and define interpretive significance
        * Recognize interpretation as a communication process
        * Accommodate audience needs, characteristics and learning
styles
        * Evaluate current approaches to learning in museums and
heritage sites
        * Read and interpret objects and sites
        * Translate research information into interpretive themes and
storylines
        * Understand strengths and weaknesses of a range of
interpretation techniques and approaches
        * Plan, implement and evaluate interpretive programs
        * Recruit, train, manage and evaluate interpretive staff and
volunteers
        * Manage issues of perspective, voice and authenticity

Instructor: Candace Matelic has developed her skills in interpretive master
planning, interpretive training, and organizational development through 25
years of museum experience at the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village,
Mission Houses Museum, and Historic St. Mary's City. She has taught widely
in museum studies and was the Director of the Cooperstown Graduate Program,
Currently, Candace works as a consultant focusing on organizational
development and museum interpretation. She has also been involved in several
professional organizations, served as a grant reviewer and has presented at

Participant's comments

The various methods of teaching/learning were very effective - they make the
subject matter so intriguing. Learning that is made fun is always so much
more interesting.

This rates as one of the best educational experiences I have ever had, due
to the experiences, organization, presentation and personality of an
outstanding educator.

I'm taking away a real, usable framework and a wealth of resource materials
- a very rich experience!
