I was trained as a picture framer to paint the inside of a wooden picture
frame with acrylic gel medium, which coats and dries very nicely on wood.
It may may be another inexpensive way to coat wooden shelves and prevent
any acid burn to the objects on the shelves.  You can buy it by the gallon.
It should be available at most decent art supply stores or through Nasco or
Dick Blick.
