Dear All of Museum-L,

The pre- (and now post-) conference preparations for the conference of
DEMHIST (ICOM's International Committee for Historic House Museums) in
Amsterdam, 14-16 October 2002, that have been (and are) keeping me tied up,
have kept me from writing you about the earthquakes and volcanoes in central
and southern Italy. Colleagues in the affected areas would be able to give
you more detailed information, but at least the national news has not
reported any damage to world-renowned monuments. On the other hand, it has
reported the immensely sad story of the annihilation of an entire class of
elementary school children, and at least one teacher, that were killed when
an earthquake caused the collapse of their school building in a small town.
Our thoughts go to the families and friends left to cope with this tragedy.

Best regards,

Star
