While scanning is certainly an option, film is still considered a more
archival standard than digital technology.  Yes, microfilm will deteriorate, like
anything else, but at a very slow rate.  With proper processing, it should last
hundreds of years.  The great advantage is that it's visible to the eye,
requiring only a magnification system, whereas digital technologies are
machine-dependent and are constantly changing.  Don't count microfilm out yet.
