Managing Editor

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, one of the world's finest museums, seeks an 
Managing Editor for the Web Group department.  The Managing Editor is responsible for the consistency, accuracy, and appropriateness of all content posted to the Museum's Web Site.  This position reviews all content prepared for the Web to ensure that it meets the Museum's editorial standards.  The Managing Editor also coordinates the work of a group of freelance copyeditors and proofreaders so that all content deadlines are met.  This position works closely with the individual departments and members of the Web site's core staff as necessary to produce web-appropriate materials primarily from existing content.  The Managing Editor is also responsible for maintaining an appropriate and consistent navigational structure across the site and advocating the principals of Web usability to museum content providers. 

Successful candidates will possess a minimum of 3+ years of work experience in a related field including, museum publications, print or electronic journalism, website writing, editing, and research.  Must have exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading  skills.  Must have a familiarity with current and emerging web technologies.  Also, must have an understanding of and experience with Web usability issues as they pertain to navigational structure.  BA or BS degree is required and a background in Art History is preferred.  Candidate with a familiarity with art historical terms and reference tools are preferred. Candidates with some knowledge with HTML coding is preferred but not required.
