Museum Studies
Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)

The School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI invites applications for a joint faculty
position in Museum Studies and either Anthropology or History, beginning
August 1998.

We are seeking an individual with a creative vision of museum studies in
relationship to both the university and broader community.  The Department
of Anthropology, with its integrated program in Applied Anthropology, and
the Department of History with a nationally recognized graduate program in
Public History, share a commitment to public service.

Approximately half time would be dedicated to directing an interdisciplinary
museum studies program, including teaching core courses, developing and
administering museum practica, establishing liaisons with area museum
professionals, coordinating faculty involvement from participating
disciplines, and generating internal and external resources for program
development.  Half time effort in teaching, research and service in he
department of appointment (either History or Anthropology) is also required.

Ph.D. by June 1998 and academic credentials appropriate for a tenure track
or tenured appointment as an assistant professor in either History or
Anthropology.  Teaching experience and a promising record of research and/or
creative activities with exhibits and/or publications are required.

Training and/or significant experience in a range of museum functions are
required, with expertise in some of the following: the role of museums in
society, history of museums, museum ethics, educational functions of
museums, collections management, curation and display, museum
administration, interpretation and description of collections.  Evidence of
effective administrative potential required.   Start-up and ongoing support
money available.  Position pending budgetary approval.
