After some internal debate I simply cannot resist
chiming into this subject.

I graduated in May from the Cooperstown Graduate
Program. I chose CGP (it was the only school I applied
to) because it seemed to be the best fit for me
personally - and I think everyone should apply to
schools with that in mind. You want a place where you
will get the best possible experience (from
professors, to living conditions, to classes offered)
for you - and I can assure you that living in rural
Cooperstown, NY will not be the ideal fit for every
potential student.

CGP offers an excellent range of general required
classes and the kinds of electives, like advanced
museum education and material culture, that appealed
to me. The alumni network (over 800 since 1964) is
very active and includes some venerable museum
professionals. Though there may be a higher
concentration of graduates in the Northeast than
elsewhere - we are spreading! Some of my classmates
already have jobs in Chicago, Ohio, Georgia, and
Kentucky, in addition to those of us staying New York
and New England.

The professors and staff at CGP are wonderful.
Attentive, thoughtful, incredibly intelligent, and
inspiring. The musuems in and near Cooperstown,
especially The Famers' Museum, the Fenimore Art
Museum, and The Baseball Hall of Fame welcome interns
with open arms - putting students to work and
providing valuable experiences.

I could go on all day talking about CGP and I would be
happy to talk to any prospective student directly.
Before closing I would like to clarify one item from a
previous posting. CGP does describe itself as the
premier museum studies program - but its not just a
self-proclamation. In fact the quote is from the
National Endowment for the Humanities. NEH awarded the
Cooperstown Graduate Association a matching grant for
our recent capital campaign and cited CGP as "the
premier program for the training of museum
professionals in the United States..." As a fully
satisified customer I have to agree!
