First Nations are asserting control of their cultural heritage in a
number of ways, including setting up their own cultural centres,
 developing new relationships with existing museums, expanding
 control of archaeology, lobbying for repatriation, etc.. This seminar
will explore these developments. In BC, museums have developed policies,
and treaties are being negotiated that deal with the repatriation of burial rema
ins
and other artifacts. In the USA, federal legislation has had a major impact on
repatriation and relationships between museums and First Nations.
This seminar will discuss how these powershifts have developed and what
their impact will be.

Topics will include:

Development of First Nation Museums and Cultural Centres;
First Nations Control of Archaeology;
Repatriation Policy and Practice;
The Nisga'a Treaty;
Legislated Repatriation- the American Experience;
Cooperative Ventures between First Nations and Non-Aboriginal Museums.
