Arriving in Style: Consumer Culture in the Early Republic

Wednesday, February 16 at 6:30pm


Join a panel of distinguished historians for a discussion on the emergence
of a consumer culture in the revolutionary era that tried to negotiate the
conflicting demands of new democratic values and the continued allure of
aristocratic luxuries. A special late-night opportunity to visit the N-YHS
exhibition Arriving in Style featuring the Beekman family coach, one of
only three vehicles used in the 18th century that survives in original
condition (the exhibition closes February 20).

Due to tremendous demand, the New-York Historical Society will be open on
Monday, February 28 for a final viewing of Alexander Hamilton: The Man Who
Made Modern America. In celebration of the success of the Hamilton
exhibition, the Society will present an afternoon and evening of special
