Recently I received excellent feedback from many colleagues when I asked
for expressions of interest in a potential issue of the Journal of
Museum Education on Museum/school collaborations for systemic change.
This was so useful that I would like to ask for feedback on several other
topics that were discussed at our Editoral Advisers' meeting at AAM.
These would be for issues of the Journal that would appear in 1998 and
1999, so I'm asking not only what interests you now, but what do you
think will be the key issues for museums as educational institutions
over the next few years?
1) Which of the following topics do you find interesting/useful ?
2) Can you suggest authors or guest editors for any topics?

Possible topics discussed by the Journal's Editorial Advisory Committee:
INSTITUTIONAL CHANGE IN MUSEUMS internal & external change; museums
as agents of change;
leadership for change

INQUIRY AND CONSTRUCTIVISM current research; programs, exhibits
reflecting constructivist philosophy

PROGRAMS AND EXHIBITS FOR VERY YOUNG CHILDREN how to serve the needs of
youngest visitors

WHO TO SERVE? How decide; how relate to a museum's mission?

THE FACE OF THE MUSEUM How the museum presents its "face" not only in
terms of architecture but also in terms of the image it presents to the
public; how its use of space relates to its mission; impact of social
events such as terrorism on public spaces

BILINGUAL ISSUE (FRENCH AND ENGLISH) ON RESEARCH Focus on great deal of
museum research currently being done in Quebec and France and
ordinarily not published in English. (Note: the Summer 96 issue of the
Journal was on museum education in Latin America and was bilingual in
Spanish and English)

To those of you on several museum lists, I apologize in advance for
multiple postings.
Please respond on list.

The Journal of Museum Education is published three times a year by the
Museum Education Roundtable (MER), a membership organization dedicated to
the use of museums and cultural institutions as educational resources.
The Journal publishes articles on a variety of topics related to the
educational mission of museums: learning theory; visitor studies;
interpretive strategies for art, history and science musuems, etc. For
more information on MER and the Journal please contact the Museum
Education Roundtable at [log in to unmask]
I look forward to your comments on the topics listed above , as well as
other suggestions for possible topics.
Thanks,
Gretchen Jennings
