All the non-profits I have worked with have reimbursed board members for travel expenses actually incurred (if the board member wishes to claim them). There are usually rules about a rate for mileage in their own car and a limit to the cost of travelling by the cheapest method. I believe that this encourages a diversity of board members. Sometimes board members will claim the expenses and then donate them back to the organisation (in the UK this can allow the organisation to claim back additional money from the tax authority).

In the UK non-profits registered as Charities aren't allowed to pay their board members a stipend.

Subject: Board Compensation

Hi Everyone!

I hope you can help with a board question that has come up at our institution. Does anyone know of museum that compensates its board members for attending monthly board meetings? Compensation can either be a stipend or reimbursement for travel expenses.

You can reply to me off-list at [log in to unmask]

Thank you for your help!

Sincerely,

Kristin Mravinec
