Overview:

The International Spy Museum, which opened in 2002, is dedicated to educating the public about the history and contemporary role of espionage and intelligence around the world.  The Museum, located in downtown Washington DC, attracts 650,000 visitors per year and is planning a move to a new, larger site also downtown, in summer 2017. The Museum contains the largest collection of international espionage artifacts ever placed on public display, along with interactive displays, film, and video that address the strategies and practices of this all-but-hidden profession.

We are seeking an exhibit developer to be part of the exhibit development team to manage the creation of one or two of the new permanent exhibitions (5,000-10,000 sq. ft.).  Working under the supervision of the Project Director and the Lead Curator, s/he will help shape the intellectual content and all visitor activities featured in the exhibitions.  The Project Manager supervises the exhibition teams on all issues related to logistics/installation.

Summary:

The ED is responsible for overseeing the exhibition’s creation from its current conceptual planning stage. S/he will translate the Museum’s content into experiences that are physically, emotionally, and intellectually accessible for the broad range of museum visitors, ensuring its capacity to engage the museum’s target audiences and meet all ADA requirements. S/he works with a team of in-house staff and serves as the liaison between the in-house exhibit team and external contributors (including designers, contractors, consultants and expert advisors) to accomplish final, installed exhibition on time and on budget.

Essential Responsibilities:

  *   Develops the exhibit within the assigned budget, schedule, and material conditions
  *   Develops and writes all conceptual documents, scripts, and storyline; drafts label copy for writer and for activity prototyping
  *   Performs research as necessary and works with content experts to ensure exhibits and experiences are historically and scientifically accurate
  *   Oversees the work of SPY staff and contract graphics researchers, historians, artifact researchers, collections manager, interactive developers, label copy writer, media producers, as well as exhibit designers to accomplish the exhibition.
  *   Manages exhibit team meetings
  *   Serves as the audience advocate to ensure experiences relate to key audiences in appropriate ways, especially as related to ADA
  *   Oversees and assists with the research and development of artifact, graphics, media, interactive lists for exhibit
  *   Oversees staff to ensure all exhibit tracking documents are accurate and supplies artifact, graphics, media, interactive lists and descriptions to exhibit designers
  *   Participates in the design process to ensure that exhibit developed is translated into the design
  *   Ensures information is communicated to all appropriate parties in a timely manner

Specific Duties:

  *   Works with Project Director and Lead Curator to finalize the exhibition’s take-home messages and develop the exhibition’s storyline
  *   Works with teams of staff and outside consultants to develop, design, and test exhibits
  *   Oversees content experts conducting research/writing; conducts small amounts of exhibit content research as necessary—ensures all material is accurate
  *   Writes the exhibition script (including interactive and media descriptions)
  *   Recommends selection of all artifacts, graphics, and media for use in the exhibit working collaboratively with SPY staff / contractor graphics and artifact researchers, historians, collections manager, interactive developers, label copy writer, media producers, and exhibit designers.
  *   Oversees label writer; responsible for all label copy review and insuring accuracy of the final exhibition content
  *   Reviews exhibit designs for accuracy and oversees revisions as necessary
  *   Reviews punch list
  *   Provides deliverables per direction

Job Requirements

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  *   Advanced degree in in field related to development of informal learning environments and materials, content expertise
  *   Minimum ten years’ experience with major museum exhibition development, including project management, interactive experience
  *   Proven ability to develop innovative, creative, engaging exhibits for diverse audiences and to manage project teams
  *   Proven knowledge of best practices in exhibit design and evaluation
  *   Demonstrated success managing the experience design process, meeting deadlines on time and within budget
  *   Excellent oral and written communication skills
  *   Proven ability to manage and work within a team environment
  *   Attention to detail combined with the ability to see the bigger picture
  *   Experience working with external contractors, consultants or partners as well as in-house colleagues
  *   Technical competence using computer applications and communicating through the Web and email
