Kelli,

I am not aware of a standard. Choose based upon what you want to
accomplish. As per a previous response, generally choose thicker when more
strength is needed. Also choose thicker when you want to isolate the object
inside more thoroughly form the exterior environment. The thicker the bag,
the more time required for permeation in or out of the bag. For purposes of
this discussion, it can be considered to be a linear relationship - twice
the thickness is twice the time for permeation. Permeation includes
moisture, so the thicker the bag, the more slowly the interior moisture
level will change in relationship to that outside the bag. Thus, thick bags
will better moderate daily or weekly environmental fluctuations than thin
ones, and will slow the effect of pollutant intrusion from the exterior.
However, if pollutants arise inside the bag from the object itself, they
will be dissipated to the exterior more slowly in a thick bag.
